Charities launch anti-arms trade campaign

Amnesty International and Oxfam have chosen Belfast to launch a new worldwide campaign to control the international arms trade.

The campaign, entitled 'Control Arms', aims to reduce arms proliferation and misuse, and has called on governments to introduce a binding arms trade treaty.

The Northern Ireland launch of the campaign coincides with a global launch in fifty countries worldwide.

This week's event will see the launch of a giant photo petition, the Million Faces Project, at Queen's University Belfast Students Union.

The petition will graphically illustrate demand from people around the world for international action on the arms trade.

People can join the petition by having photos taken or drawing a self-portrait.

Oxfam & Amnesty International plan to collect thousands of photographs of Northern Ireland people that will join thousands others from around the world on the massive virtual photo-petition.
