Controlled Explosion Carried Out On Device In L'Derry

A controlled explosion has been carried out on a suspicious object that was thrown into the rear yard of a house in L'Derry.

The incident occurred in Ebrington street at around 12.10am on Friday.

A controlled explosion was carried out on the viable pipe bomb shortly after 5.30am.

A number of houses were evacuated however they have since returned to their homes.

Detective Sergeant Brian Reid said: "I would ask anyone with any information about this incident to contact detectives at Strand Road Police Station on the non emergency number 101. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A 31-year-old man who travelled to Belfast to meet what he thought was a 13-year-old girl, has pleaded guilty to a number of sexual abuse offences against children. Anil Patel pled guilty to attempted sexual communication with a child, arranging the commission of a child sex offence and possessing extreme pornography of children.
