Ashers Baking Company Appeal Halted
An appeal by the owners of Ashers Baking Company has been halted.
It followed an intervention by Northern Ireland's Attorney General.
The firm was found guilty of discriminating against a gay man.
Ashers was ordered to pay £500 for refusing to make a cake with a slogan supporting gay marriage.
The bakery was asked by Gareth Lee to make a cake with Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie with a motto in support of gay marriage.
However, Attorney General John Larkin QC made a last-minute request to make representation in the case about any potential conflict between the region's equality legislation and European human rights laws.
The case has been adjourned until 09 May.
A petition by the Christian Institute in support of Ashers Baking Company passed 8,000 signatures ahead of the court appeal.
The petition states: "I support Ashers Baking Co and the McArthur family in their stand for freedom of speech and freedom of conscience."
The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland took Ashers to court and in May last year, a District Judge ruled that the bakery had breached political and sexual orientation discrimination regulations.
