Tesco Fined For Illegal Display Of Cigarettes

Supermarket chain Tesco has been fined after staff at one of its branches were caught displaying cigarettes to a person under the age of 18 years.

The incident happened at its premises on the Belmont Road in April last year. The company was fined £500 and also ordered to pay £69 in costs to Belfast City Council, who brought the prosecution.

The displaying of cigarettes to a person under the age of 18 years is an offence under Section 7 of the Tobacco Advertising and Promotion Act 2002 as amended by the Health Act 2009 as amended by the Tobacco Advertising and Promotion (Display) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2012.

In a second case, Marc Boyd, trading as Boyd’s in Malvern Terrace, was fined £500 for selling cigarettes to a person under the age of 18 years last September. He was also ordered to pay £69 in costs to Belfast City Council.

22-Year-Old Man Jailed For Rape At Laganside Crown Court
A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to six years for rape at Laganside Crown Court. Ahmad Alsbaihi was sentenced to six years. He will serve three years in custody and three years on licence. Over £1m Secured For Early Years Fund
Over £1 million in funding has been secured for the Early Years Fund. The Fund, which supports 153 early years organisations across Northern Ireland, will use the funding to ensure current services continue until March 2016. Education Minister John O'Dowd confirmed £1.1m in funding.

Almost 30,000 Cigarettes Seized By PSNI In INLA Crackdown
Police investigating the activities of the INLA (Irish National Liberation Army) have seized a significant amount of illicit cigarettes and tobacco in L'Derry. Searches of seven shops in the city uncovered almost 30,000 cigarettes and 20 kilograms of tobacco, along with other counterfeit goods and mobile phones.

Almost Five Million Cigarettes Seized By Police
A significant haul of nearly five million cigarettes and almost 700kg of tobacco has been seized as part of a major operation by police and customs officers in Northern Ireland. The illicit material, worth an estimated £1.9m in duty and taxes that would have been lost, was uncovered during searches in the Banbridge, Carryduff and Ballyclare areas.
