Employers to be recognised for disabilities promotion
Employers who promote the employment of people with disabilities in their workforce are set to be recognised by a new government award scheme.
NIO Minister John Spellar announced his plans for the scheme as he launched the ‘Think for a change, it’s time for a change’ campaign, which aims to raise awareness about issues affecting people with disabilities.
He said: “It is vitally important to acknowledge how successful organisations such as the 34 groups represented here today are in raising awareness at a local level about issues facing people with a disability.
"Access, education, transport, employment and participation have been highlighted and brought to the attention of the general public through the various events that have taken place during the year."
Commenting on the new employers’ award, Mr Spellar said: “Government intends to support a new award scheme which will be launched by the Employers Forum on Disability. It will reward best practice among employers who do most to promote employment of people with disabilities in their workforce by adopting measures ranging from creative recruitment and selection schemes through to disability awareness training for their employees.”
The Employers Forum will be supported by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, Department of Employment and Learning and the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment in running the new scheme up to the end of 2005.
