HSENI warn of hazardous substances use
The Health and Safety Executive of Northern Ireland (HSENI) has urged all organisations that use hazardous substances to look at ways of preventing ill health in the workplace.
The warning comes as today marks the beginning of European Week for Safety and Health, which will run from 13 – 19 October.
It is estimated that more than 160 people die from cancer due to occupational causes in Northern Ireland each year.
Liam McBrinn, Chairperson of HSENI, said: “The European Week for Safety and Health is an opportunity for employers, employees and their representatives to look at ways of improving their work environment.
"This year the theme is how dangerous substances can affect health, which is very appropriate given that this year saw the launch of the crosscutting and long-term workplace health strategy for Northern Ireland 'Working for Health'.
“Together we must address these terrible work-related statistics."
Many Northern Ireland companies are expected to take part in the Week which gives employers, workers and stakeholders an opportunity to raise awareness of the issue of dangerous substances.
Events taking place include the Annual Quarry Conference and a series of asbestos risk management seminars run in partnership with District Councils which will take place on a daily basis around Northern Ireland during the Week.

Minister praises employers work health contributions

Rainbow Project And HERe NI Awarded Funding
Health Minister Robin Swann has announced funding of more than £260,000 has been awarded to The Rainbow Project and HERe NI, from the Mental Health Support Fund. The fund was established by the Health Minister to enable charities and organisations across Northern Ireland to enhance the vital mental health support and help on offer.

Local companies recognised at health and safety awards
NIO Trade Minister Ian Pearson has congratulated the 16 winners of the second regional European Week for Safety and Health Awards organised by HSENI. The organisations received an award for the efforts they had gone to in support of European Week for Safety and Health 2002, the theme of which was 'Working on Stress'.
