New campaign aims to tackle domestic violence
Health Minister, Angela Smith today signalled the start of a new campaign to tackle domestic violence in Northern Ireland.
Speaking at the launch of a consultation paper, 'Tackling Violence At Home,' the Minister set out the government’s proposals for action.
She said: “I know that Northern Ireland has often been in the lead, nationally, in developing initiatives to address domestic violence and I am keen to build on this good work. However, much more needs to be done to bring domestic violence into the open and to tackle it effectively.
“Put simply, the government’s aim is to develop a comprehensive, joined-up approach to addressing domestic violence in our society."
She said the government wanted to build on existing good work and link the existing initiatives into a cross-cutting strategy to tackle domestic violence.
The consultation paper outlines the government’s proposals to prevent domestic violence happening in the first place and to stop it recurring when it does. It also sets out proposals to improve support and protection for victims and their families, and to bring more perpetrators of this crime to justice.
Today's consultation paper is part of an eight week consultation which will end on 12 December.
