Slight rise in unemployment figures

The latest labour force figures have revealed a slight rise in the number of people out of work in Northern Ireland.

While figures showed that some 43,000 people are unemployed, a fall of 3,000 since the same time last year, there was a slight rise in the unemployment rate to 5.6% compared to the previous quarter of 5.3%.

Seasonally adjusted figures for the period June – August 2003, showed that the number of people in employment increased.

There was also a fall in the claimant number with the past three months seeing a fall of around 100 people on the count.

Enterprise Minister, Ian Pearson said the latest figures showed Northern Ireland's economy remained robust.

"Economic forecasts expect economic growth of 2.5% this year. But to achieve this figure it is important that local companies continue to expand and develop their products and services to grow the Northern Ireland economy," he said.
