Report recommends enhancing clinical genetic services

A report, which recommends an expansion in clinical genetic services to meet the rising demand, has been published today by the Department of Health.

The report, 'Review of Clinical Genetics', which is to be issued for public consultation, recommends an expansion in clinical staff, both medical and nursing, and laboratory staff responsible for conducting a range of complex genetic tests.

Commenting on the publication, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Henrietta Campbell said: “Genetics is a rapidly expanding area of medicine and one of growing importance in diagnosing and treating patients.

“It is critical that in Northern Ireland we are able to take advantage of advances in genetics. We have an excellent team of people working in Genetics and we want to build on those strengths and continue to improve services.”

Today's report also recommends enhanced facilities and equipment. Proposals are aimed at improving today’s services and ensuring that as Genetics continues to develop the service is well placed to respond to changing needs.
