First Results Revealed In Election

The first results have been announced in the Northern Ireland Assembly election.

The first MLA to be elected was the DUP's David Hilditch in East Antrim.

The DUP's Joanne Bunting and Naomi Long of the Alliance Party have been elected in East Belfast, while Sinn Féin's Gerry Kelly has retained his North Belfast seat.

In Strangford, Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt topped the poll to along with the DUP's Michelle McIlveen. In West Belfast, Gerry Carroll has won the first ever assembly seat for People Before Profit.

In addition, four candidates have been elected on the first count in Mid Ulster; Sinn Féin's Ian Milne, Michelle O'Neill and Linda Dillon all secured their assembly seats, along with Patsy McGlone of the (SDLP).

In total, 276 candidates are competing for 108 seats throughout the regions 18 constituencies. On Thursday, polling stations opened at 7am and closed at 10pm. It is understood 703,744 people voted in the election, a turnout of 54.91%.

The final seats expected to be revealed on Saturday.

‘BELT UP’ OR ‘PAY UP’ CAMPAIGN

One in twenty children in Northern Ireland travelling in the back of a car were not wearing a seat belt in 2014, according to a new report.

A major survey commissioned by the Department Of the Environment has revealed that the overall seat belt wearing rate for car occupants has increased since April 2005.

Man Arrested After Police Seize Drugs In West Belfast
A man has been arrested after drugs were discovered in a car by police in west Belfast. PSNI officers stopped and searched a black Seat Ibiza car on Craven Street, at around 4.30pm on Monday, 06 March. A further search was carried out in the Crosby Street area and small quantity of suspected cocaine and herbal cannabis were seized.
