Alliance Pays Tribute To Susan O'Brien

The Alliance Party has paid tribute to Holywood Councillor, Susan O'Brien, who died over the weekend.

Alderman O'Brien served as Councillor for Holywood from 1981 to 2005, including serving as Deputy Mayor 1994/95 and as Mayor of North Down 1995/96. Her funeral took place today, 07 June, at St Colmcille's Church in Holywood.

Alliance Holywood Councillor Andrew Muir said: "The people of Holywood, friends, family and the wider Alliance Party were deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Susan O'Brien MBE. She dedicated herself to serving local people for many decades, including her time as a Councillor from 1981 until 2005. Susan was recognised when awarded an MBE in 2006.

"Susan's passing is a great loss but will continue to act as an inspiration for me as I work to serve the people of Holywood, spurred on by her commitment to a new more inclusive future."

£95,000 Resurfacing Project To Start In Killinchy

Resurfacing work is to start on a £95,000 improvement project in Killinchy, Co Down.

The work on Main Street and Ardview Park is to commence on Monday, 20 June.

The resurfacing scheme is expected to be substantially completed by the end of June.

Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard said the work will improve the surface quality on the carriageway and footway in the centre of Killinchy village.

Local access will be maintained and all diversions and restrictions will be clearly sign posted.

Enrolment To Be Increased At Holywood Nursery School

A development proposal to increase enrolment at a nursery school in Holywood, Co Down, has been approved.

Education Minister, Peter Weir, confirmed Holywood Nursery School will increase from 52 part time places to 78 part time places with effect from 01 September 2016.

Minister Weir said: "It is clear from the evidence provided that there is an urgent need for more pre-school places for the children in the Holywood area. My decision will allow Holywood Nursery School to meet current and anticipated levels of demand and will assist in meeting my Department’s aim of ensuring that at least one year of funded pre-school education is available to every family that wants it. This is a good day for the people of Holywood, and I am delighted to be able to make this announcement of this much needed local provision."

Hundreds Of BHS Jobs Lost
It is understood around 200 jobs are to go at four BHS department stores in Northern Ireland. The stores are located in Belfast, Holywood, Lisburn and Newtownabbey. On Thursday, it was announced that the retailer is to go into liquidation after efforts to find a buyer for the store failed. In total, up to 11,000 jobs will be lost across the UK.

One person injured in east Belfast armed robbery
A 34-year-old man has been injured during an armed robbery in his east Belfast home yesterday evening. A gang of three men entered the house in the Motelands area, off the Old Holywood Road, shortly before 8.30pm.

B&Q open 100th UK Warehouse in Belfast
DIY giants, B&Q has officially opened its 100th UK Warehouse in Belfast, which has created 215 new jobs. B&Q Warehouse, Holywood Exchange is the retailer's eighth store in Northern Ireland, which will bring the total number of B&Q staff in Northern Ireland to 1,000.

Renovation Work Continues At Cultra Railway Station
