Book Of Condolence For Victims Of Mass Shooting In Orlando Opens In Belfast

A Book of Condolence has been opened for the victims of a mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, at at the City Hall in Belfast.

Omar Mateen killed at least 50 people and injured over 50 others in what is being described as the deadliest mass shooting in the country's history.

First to sign the book were the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Brian Kingston, the Deputy Lord Mayor, Councillor Mary Ellen Campbell, the High Sheriff of Belfast, Alderman Jim Rodgers, and the US Consul-General, Dan Lawton.

The book will be open for members of the public to sign during normal City Hall opening hours.

Alliance MLA Stephen Farry said: "This is a horrific attack on people relaxing and having a good time. Our thoughts are with the people of Orlando and in particular the victims and survivors of this attack and their families. Indeed, Orlando is a part of the United States that many people from Northern Ireland will be familiar with.

"This was more than just an attack on the individuals but an attack on the values of an open, liberal, and diverse society. It is a reminder that around the world that many people continue to attacked or persecuted for their sexual orientation.

"It is vital that this attack is now properly investigated.

Man Shot In The Legs In North Belfast
A man has been shot in the legs in north Belfast. The paramilitary-style attack happened in the Jamaica Street area on Sunday, 25 June. The man was taken to hospital, however his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

PSNI Appeal For Information After Cars Set Alight In North Belfast
The PSNI have appealed for information after four cars were set alight in north Belfast. Police say the suspected arson attack happened at around 22:30 on Tuesday night on the Whitewell Road. It is understood no one was injured in the incidents.
