Orange Hall Attacked Near Lisburn

An Orange Hall has been attacked near Lisburn.

Graffiti was daubed on the exterior of Derriaghy Orange hall and a portrait of Her Majesty The Queen was also defaced.

It is understood the incident took place over the weekend.

A spokesperson from the Orange Order said: "Those who engage in such premeditated wanton vandalism should be ashamed of their actions.

"It is no coincidence such criminality should occur on the weekend of the Queen’s official 90th birthday celebrations. Such deliberate contempt for our monarch is contemptible and outrageous, and will quite rightly be condemned by the vast majority of the local community.

"The intolerant and ignorant delinquents behind this attack have nothing to offer our society going forward."

Work Begins On Road Resurfacing Scheme In Co Down

Work has started on a £160,000 road resurfacing project in Co Down.

The work on the A7 Belfast Road in Downpatrick includes the resurfacing of a 1.1kilometre stretch on the road, from 180metres north of the B2 Annacloy Road Junction to Bell’s Hill, Crossgar.

Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard said: "This £160,000 scheme represents a significant investment in the roads infrastructure on the A7 Downpatrick to Belfast route.

"Once work is complete, road users will quickly realise the long term benefits from the new road surface along the stretch."

The works will be carried out under temporary traffic control from 9.15am to 4.30pm daily excluding Sundays. The scheme will be completed under a road closure in July.

To facilitate the resurfacing work a temporary 40mph speed limit will be in operation on the A7 Belfast Road, Downpatrick from 120m north of its junction with B2 Annacloy Road, a distance of 1.2kilometres, to a point 90metres south of its junction with Crossgar Road East, from 8am on Monday 20 June to 8pm on Friday 08 July.

Alliance Vows To Fight To Stop Cuts To Special Educational Needs Over Nursery Concerns

The Alliance Party has pledged to fight to stop cuts to Special Educational needs in the nursery provision.

The party's MLA Chris Lyttle presented a petition to the Education Minister on the issue at Stormont.

Mr Lyttle said: "This is an important issue that the Minister must commit to taking seriously, rather than simply passing the buck to the Education Authority.

"He has a duty to meet with and listen to the concerns of all involved - especially as the families have lost confidence and trust in the Education Authority after its failure to disclose parental and principles oppositions to these proposals.

"The Education Authority's failure to meaningfully engage with parents on this issue has left them anxious and confused on this important matter. The Education Minister cannot afford to treat them with the same disdain."
