Eight Gentoo Penguins Hatch At Belfast Zoo

Eight gentoo penguins have hatched at Belfast Zoo.

The breeding season started in February and the zoo believes they will be a "firm favourite" with visitors.

Senior Keeper, Raymond Robinson, said: "Penguins are one of the most popular species at Belfast Zoo, especially the underwater viewing area where visitors can admire their swimming skills. If you are potty about penguins, you can now get closer than ever before with our new animal experiences."

Cold Eye Turned On Zoo Animals
Belfast Zoo re-opened today as freezing conditions eased - only to close again shortly before noon as a blizzard enveloped eastern parts of NI. The news came as Zoo keepers began undertaking a complete head count of every animal as part of the facility's licensing regulations.

Belfast Zoo reopens farm area
Belfast Zoo has reopened the rare breeds farm area for the bank holiday weekend after a prolonged period of closure. The zoo farm area, particularly popular with younger visitors, has been closed as part of the precautions taken at the zoo since the foot-and-mouth outbreak in February.

New Visitor Centre For Belfast Zoo
Construction has begun on a new, £600,000 state of the art visitor centre at Belfast Zoo. The new entrance pavilion will include a new souvenir shop, pay-booths and payment systems, a covered walkway for wet weather shelter and a tourist exhibition space focussing on native and non-native wildlife.

Man Charged Following Sectarian Crime Reports In North Belfast Police investigating reports of sectarian motivated crime in north Belfast on Wednesday, 21st May, have made an arrest. A 45-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday 03 June, in connection with the incidents. He has since been charged with criminal damage.

Monkey 'Clipped By Car' In North Belfast Dies
A male spider monkey, which escaped from Belfast Zoo on Saturday, 09 June, has died after being struck by a car. He was "clipped by a car" on the M2 in north Belfast. The monkey was being tracked by zoo keepers. A spokesperson said: "We are currently investigating how the escape occurred from the monkey island on which the animals are kept.
