DoE issue roads warning as clocks go back

'Pay attention or pay the price' was the message being put out by the Department of Environment (DoE) today ahead of clock's going back this weekend.

Sunday morning marks the end of British summer time, however it also marks the beginning of another cold, dark, miserable winter.

Statistics show that during wintertime, on average, 61 children are killed or seriously injured annually on local roads.

The highest level of deaths or serious injuries occurs between 3pm, the end of the school day for many primary schools, and 6pm in the evening.

DoE’s Acting Chief Road Safety Education Officer, David Young, said: "As winter closes in, we all have a responsibility to be aware of worsening weather conditions and deteriorating light. Adjust your speed and driving to take account of these.

"It is imperative that drivers slow down and pay attention particularly while overtaking buses when children are boarding or alighting them. Children too need to be vigilant and parents need to ensure that their children wear bright or reflective clothing or armbands – 'Remember Pay Attention Or Pay The Price'".
