Ealing Traffic Wardens To Strike To Secure London Living Wage

Ealing traffic wardens who are members of Unite, the union, will be striking for a second day today, 05 July, as part of a 72 hour walk-out in a bid to secure the London living wage and end a two tier workforce.

The union's 38 members who voted for strike action with 100 per cent voting in favour, have already staged a two day strike in their fight for fairer pay.

The dispute with NSL, which provides the traffic warden service for Ealing council, centres on the company’s refusal to become an accredited living wage employer, as defined by the Living Wage Foundation.

Unite has warned, that without this commitment workers will be left high and dry whenever new living wage rates are calculated. The London rate is set annually by the London Living Wage Foundation and is calculated by the Greater London Authority to reflect the real cost of living in the capital.

Anger is also mounting over the company's attempts to create a two tier workforce by the withdrawal of the 50 pence an hour attendance allowance to new joiners. They are calling for an 'equal day’'s pay for an equal day's work'.

Unite is urging NSL to get around the negotiating table to reach a settlement to this increasingly bitter and fraught dispute.
