Tributes Paid To Nice Terror Attack Victims

The Leader of the Green Party has paid tribute to people affected by the tragic events which happened in Nice, France, on Thursday, 14 July.

At least 84 people have been killed, several of them children, after an armed man drove a truck through a crowd who had gathered to watch the Bastille Day fireworks display.

Mr Steven Agnew said: "Words of condemnation seem so empty after what has been a devastating and brutal attack.

"I can only imagine the terror people in France are experiencing.

"There are no simple solutions to terrorism and we should be wary of those who offer them.

"However, we must co operate internationally to make it as difficult as possible for people who wish to inflict death and suffering.

"My thoughts are once again with the people of France."

Sinn Fein MLA Martin McGuinness said: "Last night's attack in Nice has shocked the world.

"The fact that so many people died while out enjoying celebrations for a national holiday makes it all the more tragic.

"I am conscious of the fact that people from so many countries , including some of our own citizens and those from my own city were caught up in this horrific attack.

"The scale of the loss of life is heartbreaking and my thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and families of all those killed and injured.

"We must all stand together in the face of hate and intolerance and show solidarity with the people of France at this time."

Ulster Unionist MEP, Jim Nicholson, said: "I am absolutely disgusted and repulsed at the cowardly terrorist attack on men, women and children as they celebrated Bastille Day in Nice. My thoughts and prayers are with the President and people of France.

"Those who carry out and encourage such attacks hate our way of life and the freedoms that we hold dear. We must re-double our efforts and work ever more closely with our European and Transatlantic Allies to enhance our security, share intelligence and remove the threat from the terrorists who want to drive us back to the dark ages. It will be a slow process, requiring much fortitude and the will to face them down, but it must be done.

"I will be speaking to colleagues from across the EU in the coming days and I know that they will be determined to see a robust, co-ordinated approach to dealing with the terrorism threat."
