Union Flag Placed On Bonfire In West Belfast

A Union flag has been placed on a bonfire in west Belfast.

The flag was hung from the anti-internment bonfire at Divis Street before being set alight on Monday, 08 August.

Alliance Justice spokesperson Trevor Lunn MLA has criticised those responsible.

He said: "It is disrespectful to burn any national flag on a bonfire or anywhere else. It is a crime that does nothing but raise tension and promote division.

"It is also not acceptable to burn tyres on a bonfire, as the dangerous toxins they contain could damage the health of those in the surrounding area.

"Alliance believes in in respectful, non-intimidatory displays of culture, and showing tolerance for the beliefs and viewpoints of others. However, burning flags does not do that. Those who carry out this sort of display must be condemned in the strongest possible terms."

"Those responsible clearly have no regard for the area in which they live or for the local community. I would urge anyone with information to ensure the PSNI can apprehend those responsible."
