Construction Work To Begin On £300,000 Road Scheme In Co L'Derry

Construction work is to begin on a £300,000 major carriageway and resurfacing project near Maghera, Co L'Derry.

The work on the A6 Glenhane Road includes resurfacing which extends a distance of approximately 1km from its junction with the Glen Road to just beyond its junction with the Fallaghloon Road.

Work is due to start on Monday, 05 September, and is expected to be completed the week commencing 17 October.

Sinn Féin MLA Ian Milne welcomed the announcement.

He said: "This investment by my party colleague and Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard will improve the strength and surface quality of this busy trunk road and address ongoing maintenance problems associated with the road.

"I welcome news that a two-way traffic flow will be in operation as it will help to minimise any inconvenience to the travelling public and local businesses on the Glenshane Road during the period of resurfacing."

Call For Minister To Introduce Positive Measures To Redress Gender Imbalance

Alliance Health spokesperson Paula Bradshaw MLA has called for the Minister to introduce positive measures to redress the gender imbalance in ambulance service staff.

The South Belfast MLA was speaking after new figures in the Health and Social Care Workforce Census for the period ending March 31, revealed a stark difference between the total staff employed, with only 25 per cent being female. Broken down further, only 18 per cent of ambulance officers are female, while only 19 per cent of rapid response vehicle paramedics are women.

She said: "Gender inequalities exist in every area of society and our everyday lives. While Alliance does not support quotas, I believe a Departmental strategy is needed to combat the difference between male and female staff members.

"Women should be encouraged to enter the health service in all areas - by doing so, there can be a sea change in attitudes towards females in the ambulance service and the ending of complacency in this matter."
