'Prosecutions Not Enough' To Deter People Who Carry Out Fish Kills - Alliance

The Alliance Party said "prosecutions alone are not enough" to deter people who carry out fish kills in Northern Ireland.

Leader David Ford made the call after it was confirmed those behind the recent fish kills in the Glenavy and Six Mile Water rivers are being prosecuted.

Mr Ford said: "These incidents were shocking and a clear reminder we need a stronger and safer way of managing our rivers. Aside from the obvious animal cruelty issues, every time a river is polluted in such a way and fish killed, it damages the livelihood of all anglers who use the river to fish.

"People need to be made aware of their responsibilities and we need to ensure they dispose of any waste in an environmentally friendly way.

"An independent Environmental Protection Agency with strong powers of regulation would be able to help in this regard - helping safeguard our rivers and protecting them against would-be polluters."

Health Partnership Forum To Be Established

NI's Health Minister Michelle O'Neill is to set up a Health Partnership Forum with Trade Union colleagues.

Sinn Féin MP Paul Maskey welcomed the announcement.

He said: "I welcome the establishment of a Health Partnership Forum.

"Since my party colleague Michelle O'Neill took over as Health Minister she has shown that she is interested in hearing ideas from the grass roots and make changes where possible based on those ideas.

"We need all relevant partners to provide strategic influence in both policy development and service delivery in the face of pressures as a result of Tory austerity.

"An agreed approach on the way forward will ensure that everyone is behind the reshaping and refocusing of our services."
