French police detain five suspected of links to Real IRA

Police in France have detained five people suspected of having links to the republican terror group the Real IRA.

All five, who were arrested in raids carried out today, are understood to be French nationals from the Brittany area. The arrests followed the discovery of a small cache of weapons and ammunition near the port of Dieppe.

The raids were a co-ordinated swoop by officers of several security agencies including the French police's anti-terrorist squad and counter-espionage agencies.

French sources have indicated that it is thought that the five arrested may be involved in support a network for terrorists, possibly with affiliations to Breton nationalists or the Spanish terror group ETA.
