Arson link to firefighter's death in Limavady

Police have confirmed that hotel fire in Limavady that claimed the life of a firefighter at the weekend was arson.

Firefighter Joe McCloskey, 50, from Dungiven, died in hospital on Sunday after he fell through the roof of a store room at Gorteen House Hotel as he tackled a blaze.

The father of five from Dungiven suffered extensive burns to his body as colleagues struggled to rescue him from the inferno.

Five firefighters who suffered minor injuries and smoke inhalation during their rescue of their colleague have been offered expert counselling.

Northern Ireland's Chief Fire Officer, Colin Lammey, paid tribute to Mr McCloskey who was a 25-year veteran. He said that the death of Mr McCloskey had been a deep shock to his colleagues.
