Drugs strategy to be tackled with 'energy and vigour'
The government will continue to take forward the Northern Ireland drug strategy with energy and vigour.
This was the message from NIO Ministers, Jane Kennedy, John Spellar and Angela Smith in a joint statement in response to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee's report on the Illegal Drugs Trade and Drug Culture in Northern Ireland.
Their statement read: "The problems related to drug misuse are a high priority. Everything is being done to ensure that these problems are tackled efficiently and effectively.
"We welcome this detailed and considered report. We are pleased that the report acknowledges that a great deal has been achieved in tackling the misuse of drugs in Northern Ireland in recent years, particularly through the development and implementation of the Northern Ireland Drug and Alcohol campaign.
"However, we note that the Report has made a number of recommendations across a range of issues, which involve a number of departments and agencies. The government will examine these very closely and make a formal response to the committee in due course."
In their introduction to the report, the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee said Northern Ireland stood apart from the rest of the UK because the drugs trade in the province remained "enmeshed with those who are, or have been, paramilitaries".
The government must provide a formal response to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee in respect of this report by early January 2004.
