DARD announces £2m organic funding scheme

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has announced the introduction of a £2 million Organic Farming Scheme.

The scheme is designed to assist producers to convert their existing animal housing to comply fully with the more stringent requirements set by the organic sector bodies.

The funding will be used for the conversion of animal housing, associated facilities, machinery and equipment.

The investments covered are:
  • Replacement, conversion or construction of fixed livestock accommodation to comply with organic standards.
  • Provision of mobile housing for pigs and poultry to meet the organic standards.
  • Provision of storage facilities for farmyard manure.
  • Provision of storage facilities for bedding material.
  • Provision of new machinery and equipment essential to the construction or improvement of immovable property.
  • General costs – such as architects, engineers and consultant fees, feasibility studies etc.
The maximum payment per farm business under this Scheme will be £30,000. The rate of grant will be 60% (or 75% in Less Favoured Areas) of the total cost of housing.

The rate of grant will be 40% (or 50% in Less Favoured Areas) of investments in associated machinery and equipment, provision of storage for farmyard manure and provision of storage for bedding material.

However, the Department will still provide advice to farmers in relation to any investment issues to enable them to upgrade to full organic compliance as deemed by the Organic Sector Bodies.
