Public Consultation Begins On Belfast Transport Hub

A public consultation has been launched over plans to establish a new transport hub in Belfast.

Translink is seeking residents' views on proposals to develop a transport-led regeneration scheme at the Europa Buscentre and Great Victoria Street Train Station.

Translink said the scheme has "the potential to be one of the most important development projects in the region" and was cited in the Urban Strategies Report as one of the top schemes needed to deliver Belfast as a "modern European City".

The company has been engaging with local stakeholders over the past 18 months to help shape development proposals.

Subject to securing the appropriate funding and planning permissions, construction is expected to start in 2016/17.

Launching the public consultation, Translink Group Chief Executive Chris Conway said: "The Belfast Hub will ensure we have the right infrastructure in place to attract more people to use public transport and active travel modes, supporting a key outcome of the draft Programme for Government. Along with other key projects, it will enable a transformation in public transport making a positive impact for everyone in Northern Ireland.

"Identified as one of the NI Executive's flagship projects, this impressive new facility will act as a catalyst for regeneration in one of the special action areas designated in Belfast City Council's city centre and regeneration strategy, providing new jobs, investment opportunities and supporting the growth and prosperity of NI.

"We look forward to receiving public feedback and would encourage everyone to have their say on proposals for this major development."

The consultation phase is open until Friday, 02 December. Further consultation will take place in 2017 before a planning application is submitted.
