Model aeroplane leaves 1,200 homes without power
Over 1,200 homes in Co Antrim were left without power on Wednesday after a model aeroplane crashed into overhead power cables.
The accident left customers in the Dunvale area of Ballymena without power for several hours.
Julie Cole, NIE Safety Officer, urged anyone flying kites or model aircraft to be aware of nearby overhead lines and to stay well away from them.
“It is essential that children and their parents understand that electricity is safe when left alone, but can be potentially fatal when tampered with," she said.
“We would urge everyone to be aware of their surroundings. People can be seriously injured or killed by coming into contact with overhead electricity lines and equipment while fishing, flying kites or model aircraft or sailing.”
Anyone, whose kite or model aeroplane comes into contact with an overhead power cable is asked to phone NIE immediately on 08457 643 643.
