NI Unemployment figures show slight increase

Unemployment figures in Northern Ireland have shown a slight increase, according to the latest Labour Force statistics.

The unemployment rate for the period July - September 2003 was 5.6%, an increase of 0.4 percentage points on the previous quarter from April – June.

Employment figures, meanwhile, saw a slight drop during the period from 739,000 during the April – June period to 729,000 during July – September.

The claimant count rate at October was also down by 0.1 percentage points to 4.3% on the rate for one year earlier. The seasonally adjusted total increased by 100 over the month to October to 34,800.

The latest unemployment rate in Northern Ireland is 6%, a decrease of 0.1% over the quarter, according to the latest Northern Ireland Labour Force Survey.

NI unemployment rate shows slight rise
Northern Ireland's unemployment rate has risen slightly, but has remained below the UK average for the tenth consecutive month. Latest official figures also show increased output levels for both production and service sector industries. The NI seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in NI was 4.5% for the period March - May 2006.

Court To Consider Electrician Rate Increase
The Labour Court in Dublin will today consider an application from the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union (TEEU) to increase the hourly rate for electricians by €1.05. This follows a non-binding recommendation from another division of the same Court to apply this increase to settle last July's one-week strike by electricians.

Jobless Figures Highest In Nearly 30 Years
While the construction industry in Northern Ireland accounted for approximately one third of a dramatic rise in the number of unemployment benefit claimants in November, job losses have been more widely spread among other sectors this month. Figures released today show the largest monthly increase in claimants across all sectors in almost 30 years.
