Trimble calls on IRA to build confidence
Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble, has called on the Republican movement to "make good its words" and end its conflict for good.
The Upper Bann MP was responding to a poll in a leading Belfast newspaper which revealed that 44% of people want the Good Friday Agreement fully implemented if the IRA release a statement promising to end its war for good.
Mr Trimble said: “I am encouraged by the support that exists within the Unionist community for powersharing devolution on the basis of a clear end to IRA activity. The onus is on the Republican Movement to make good its words, to end this conflict now and to demonstrate that it is over in a clear, transparent way.
“The poll shows also that those who say ‘No’ to an inclusive, democratic Assembly, are on the margins of political debate."
Yesterday's poll in The Belfast Telegraph revealed that a total of 47% of those questioned support a renegotiation of the Agreement compared to 36% who call for its full implementation "without any modification".
More worryingly for Mr Trimble however, was the figure that 48% of Ulster Unionist respondents and 62% of DUP supporters still want renegotiation even in the event of an IRA statement along the above lines.
