Heritage Open Days a success says DOE

The DOE's Environment and Heritage Service has proclaimed its European Heritage Open Days a major success.

More than 37,000 people voted with their feet by visiting our built heritage across Northern Ireland during September. There were 190 properties opened to visitors Free Of Charge over the weekend of 20 and 21 September as well as 18 guided walks, bus tours and special events.

Commenting on the weekend, DOE Environment & Heritage Service coordinator, Patricia McCall, said: "Our visitor figures estimate that 37,391 visits were paid throughout this festival of culture, architecture and heritage. 10,000 more people visited properties this year than in 2002.

"This is the first year that all forty-eight European countries have taken part in European Heritage Days. It is great for Northern Ireland to be a part of this and it is a great opportunity for local people to live and breathe our past."
