Man Convicted Of Benefit Fraud
A man has been convicted for claiming benefits he was not entitled to at Newry Magistrates' Court.
Anthony O'Brien claimed Jobseeker's Allowance and Housing Benefit totalling £4,111 while failing to declare employment. He was fined £300 and ordered to pay an offenders levy of £15.
He is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Department for Communities.
Work Underway On £183,000 Road Scheme In Co Down
Construction work is underway on a road resurfacing scheme in Rathfriland, Co Down.
Banbridge Road and Dromore Street will be closed from Monday, 27 February, until Sunday, 12 March, to facilitate to the works.
The preparatory works on the £183,000 scheme are being carried out to adjust kerbs, drainage gullies and other minor works to strengthen verges. During the preparatory works the road will not be closed, however it will be necessary to use temporary traffic signals to manage the safe movement of traffic and provide a safe working area for the operatives on site.
Traffic normally using Banbridge Road and Dromore Street will be diverted via Lissize Road, Loughbrickland Road and Newry Street.
From Monday 27 February 2017 until Sunday 5 March 2017, a short stretch of Ballyroney Road at its junction with Banbridge Road will also be closed. Traffic using the Ballyroney Road will be diverted via Island Bog Road, Banbridge Road, Lissize Road, Loughbrickland Road and Newry Street.
Local access will be maintained during the improvements.
Call For Long To Clarify On Slur Allegations
SDLP councillor Pat Catney has called on Alliance Party Leader Naomi Long to come clean on allegations published in the Belfast Telegraph that she described Lisburn councillors Geraldine Rice and Vasundhara Kamble as "balloons".
Mr Catney said: "Alliance Party Leader Naomi Long needs to come clean on the allegations in today’s Belfast Telegraph, where it is suggested that she described Lisburn councillors Geraldine Rice and Vasundhara Kamble as "complete balloons" in a party Facebook group. In an era of mutual respect and equality, such comments are not befitting of any public representative, and especially not from the leader of a political party.
"Naomi Long should immediately clarify if she did or didn't make these comments and apologise to the two councillors in question if she did. I also call on local Alliance candidate Trevor Lunn to clarify that he does not support or endorse these comments in any way."
