International Training Projects for young unemployed people

Border Horizons are launching an exciting programme of International Training Projects for young unemployed people in 2004.

Recruitment has started for next year's programmes that include projects to America, Canada and Europe. Application forms are currently available from the Border Horizons Office and should be returned during November and December 2003. As with previous years these programmes are sure to be heavily subscribed so early application is advisable.

In 2004 Border Horizons will offer the following programmes to young unemployed people in the Donegal, Derry Londonderry and Antrim areas:
  • Multi Media
  • Retail
  • Property Maintenance
  • Hospitality
  • I.T. Design
  • Business Administration
  • Multi Skills / Options
  • I.C.T.
  • Web Design
  • Leadership
Programmes are open to anyone aged 18 to 28 who is unemployed and lives in the greater North West Region and who has not previously participated in an International Fund for Ireland sponsored Wider Horizons Programme. No Previous experience is required as full training is given on each programme. Applicants for the Leadership programme should additionally be involved in some voluntary capacity within their local community.

Each programme will involve skills training, qualifications, internet training, customer care, work placement and overseas work experience. All 2004 programmes will last for a total of 22 weeks. Programmes will commence throughout the year with initial programme starting in January.

In addition all trainees will receive a training and travel allowance during their participation on the programmes. Border Horizons will cover the cost of all training, overseas accommodation, flights, travel, overseas meals and social programmes. Each programme is fully covered by insurance. Border Horizons will secure the necessary Visa’s and work placements for those eligible for travel to America, Canada and Europe.

Each programme will give participants the opportunity to further advance their skills and learning in one of the programme areas listed above or will give the opportunity to try out a new area of work. Each programme will involve 21 trainees drawn from across the region and will create opportunities for those involved to make new friends and to establish new relationships. Participants will enjoy a social aspect to each programme both locally and overseas.

In 2004 each of the programmes will involve a 10-week pre-departure training element, followed by 8-weeks overseas and a 4-week return phase. During the final phase of each programme participants will be prepared for working life through a structured job search programme.

Previous Border Horizons programmes have been very successful in leading trainees into full time employment or further training / education.

All of the above programmes are funded by the International Fund for Ireland through its Wider Horizons Programme initiative. Further support is given by FAS and DEL.

Sir Reg Hails Training Award Winners

NI training schemes suffer cutbacks
Some of Northern Ireland's most recognised training schemes are to be cut, the Government announced today. The Worktrack programme, which provides 26 weeks of work based training is to be scrapped, while there are to be cuts to Learndirect, an online learning scheme, as well as cuts to specialist IT and management training schemes.
