Work To Start On Carriageway Resurfacing Project

Work is to start on a £180,000 carriageway resurfacing project in Newtownards.

The work on the Greengraves Road will begin on Monday, 13 March, and it will improve the strength and surface quality of the carriageway on the link road between Newtownards and Dundonald.

It is expected to be substantially completed by the end of March 2017.

Local access will be maintained and all diversions and restrictions will be clearly signposted.

Eastwood: SDLP Is Reinvigorated

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has said that the party is reinvigorated after being returned with an increased mandate after the Assembly Election. The SDLP First Preference Vote total increased by 12,000 as the party recorded a proportionate gain of two seats.

Mr Eastwood said: "I want to put on record my thanks to SDLP activists and SDLP supporters who have delivered an increased mandate for the party after the Assembly election. Our vote has increased, our share of Assembly seats has increased and our ambition has increased.

"Twelve strong SDLP MLAs in a reduced Assembly is a statement of intent. The party has now arrested the period of decline and is returning to growth. This is the first time since 1998 that we have recorded gains. The SDLP is on the move."

Farmer And Haulier Convicted For Transporting Animal 'Not Fit' For Journey

A farmer and haulier have been convicted of transporting an animal that was not fit for the journey.

Mark McCurdy from Bushmills and Philip McCurdy from Dunserverick were convicted at Coleraine Magistrates' Court.

Mr M McCurdy was fined £750 plus £15 offenders levy.

Mr P McCurdy pleaded guilty and was fined £500 plus £15 offenders levy.

Philip McCurdy transported an animal belonging to Mark McCurdy to an abattoir in Northern Ireland. The Official Veterinarian (OV) at the abattoir described the condition of the animal as being not fit for transport. In the opinion of the OV, the animals lameness was due to a fracture of the left femur and transporting it caused the animal severe pain and unnecessary suffering.

SDLP Assembly Member Dominic Bradley MLA has announced that he is to retire from frontline politics at the next election. Mr Bradley has been an SDLP Assembly Member since 2003. He said he believed it was now time to pass on the baton to other SDLP representatives in the Constituency.

Belleek Pottery to cut production to three-day week
Workers at Belleek Pottery in County Fermanagh have been told that the firm is to go on a three-day working week from Monday June 10. The firm said that the decision was made because of a downturn in business since September 11 and a dip in tourist numbers.

Former SDLP Leader To Stand For Fine Gael
Former SDLP leader Mark Durkan is set to run as an election candidate for Fine Gael in the upcoming European elections in May. It comes after the Stormont party recently announced its partnership with Fianna Fáil. The former Foyle MP will return as a Fine Gael candidate for Dublin. Mr Durkan led the SDLP from 2001 to 2010, succeeding John Hume.

John Hume Awarded 'Greatest' Honour
Former SDLP stalwart, John Hume has spoken of his "tremendous honour" at being awarded the prize of 'Ireland's Greatest'. An RTÉ programme had whittled a top 40 contenders down to five this week, with viewers in the Irish Republic then voting the former SDLP leader to the top spot.
