Call For Political Leadership To Tackle Bonfires In L'Derry

SDLP Ballyarnett Councillor Brian Tierney has called for political leadership to tackle bonfires in L'Derry.

"Bonfires which burn the national flag of any community or which burn the election posters of any political party are an expression of hate. There is no place in this city or in this society for such behaviour - wherever it comes from.

"There is still time for leadership in this issue. The materials can, and should, be removed. We can preserve community relations. The council and the PSNI must act to protect all our communities.

"All political representatives in our city should make a clear statement of condemnation and express their support for action to be taken immediately."
