Pensioner Dies In Co Down Road Collision
A pensioner who died in a road collision in Co Down has been named.
Pedestrian Geoffrey Cartwright, 78, died following a one vehicle crash on south Promenade in Newcastle just before 11pm on Thursday, 24 August.
An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit and dangerous driving causing death. He has been released on bail.
A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police in Downpatrick are appealing for witnesses to contact them by calling 101, quoting reference 1530 of 24/08/17. Alternatively, information can also be given anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers 0800 555 111."
Mournes Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke said: "I am greatly saddened to hear of the news that a local man Geoff Cartwright has tragically lost his life, at the Harbour area of Newcastle.
"I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased following this tragic incident. The local community has been left in shock by this news, Geoff was a gentleman, who was liked by everyone, I have known him all my life and it is truly heartbreaking to comprehend this news."
Alliance South Down Councillor Andrew McMurray said: "I would like to offer my condolences to the loved ones of Mr Cartwright.
"Local people will be shocked by this sad tragedy, with another life lost needlessly on our roads.
"If anybody has any information about this incident then I would urge them to contact the police."
