Nichola Mallon Announced As New SDLP Deputy Leader

North Belfast MLA Nichola Mallon has been appointed the new Deputy Leader of the SDLP.

Leader Colum Eastwood said he was delighted that she had accepted the nomination.

He said: "Nichola's unyielding compassion and fierce commitment to social justice and defending the rights of the most vulnerable in our society has made her an outstanding public representative. I have no doubt that she will serve the party well as our new Deputy Leader.

"As we enter a period of immense instability on the island and across this continent, there will be an inevitable shift in politics. More than ever, we have to be outward looking, we have to be open to the changes on this island and open to its opportunity. I have given Nichola special responsibility to undertake that work on behalf of the SDLP."

Nichola Mallon MLA said: "This is a critical moment for our politics.

"The challenge we all face is to forge a society based on a positive accommodation of difference and diversity.

"That challenge is made all the more important following the Brexit Bill vote last night.

"I'm delighted to be given the opportunity to step up and take on that work within the SDLP and with political parties and civic society across this island."

Tenants And Homeowners Urged To Check Eligibility For New Rate Rebate Scheme
Tenants and homeowners are being urged to check their eligibility for the new Rate Rebate Scheme. The new scheme, from Land & Property Services (LPS), entitles ratepayers in receipt of Universal Credit to a rebate on their rates and is being rolled out in conjunction with Universal Credit across Northern Ireland.

New Shared Sports Facility Opens In Belfast
A new shared sports facility has been opened in Belfast. Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon and Arts and Leisure Minister Carál Ní Chuilín opened the new sports facility at Aquinas Diocesan Grammar School. A joint project between Aquinas and Ulster Rugby, the facility was funded by the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure (DCAL) and Belfast City Council.

SDLP's Nichola Mallon Nominated For Belfast Mayor
SDLP North Belfast Councillor Nichola Mallon is set to become Belfast's first female, nationalist Lord Mayor, after being nominated by her party to succeed Sinn Féin's Máirtín Ó Muilleoir. The closing date for nominations for the SDLP leadership contest came on Friday September 28 at 5.30pm. Colum Eastwood New Leader Of SDLP
Colum Eastwood has been voted to be the new leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). Mr Eastwood defeated Dr Alasdair McDonnell in a vote at the party's annual conference at Armagh City Hotel. He is the youngest ever leader of the SDLP and he won leadership with 172 votes to 133.

He beat three other candidates at the SDLP conference to succeed Margaret Ritchie and has pledged to change the electoral fortunes of the party after a period of decline in its support.
