L'Derry Security Alert Continues Into Second Day

A security alert in L'Derry has entered a second day following the discovery of "suspicious objects".

The security alert began on Thursday, when police received reports that a device may have been left on the Derrychrier Road, Dungiven, at around 1.20pm.

Police have reported that two suspicious objects have been discovered, but it is not yet known "exactly what they are". It is understood that further forensic examinations are due to be carried out today, 13 October.

Police have appealed to the public to not touch any suspicious objects and immediately report them. Police also apologised to local residents for the ongoing inconvenience and disruption that has been caused.

Sinn Féin councillor Sean McGlinchey has slammed those responsible for what he described as "pipe bombs" on the Derrychrier Road in Dungiven.

He said: "Those behind the leaving of two viable pipe bombs on the Derrychrier Road have shown blatant disregard for this community.

"The road has been sealed off and residents evacuated causing disruption to these families and anyone living in the area.

"There is no justification for this whatsoever. I would appeal to anyone who saw anything of suspicion in the area to bring that information to the PSNI."
