Residents Evacuated During Security Alert In Poleglass

Residents have been evacuated from their homes during a security alert just outside west Belfast.

A suspect device was reported to police in the Poleglass area on Monday, 30 October.

The Bell Steel Road and Pantridge Road areas were sealed off during the alert.

The PSNI are urging people in the area to be vigilant and if they see any suspicious objects not to touch them.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn said: "I condemn those responsible for this disruption as they have no regard whatsoever for the local community.

"There can be no justification for this type of activity and I would appeal to anyone with information to contact the police."

SDLP West Belfast Councillor Brian Heading said: "These people have no legitimacy, no credibility and aren't wanted in our communities. The people of Ireland have overwhelmingly rejected those who pursue a path of violence, terrorising their own communities in the process.

"There is growing concern in this community. People have been forced from their homes and the police cordon has now been expanded as the search for a bomb continues.

"All of this again emphasises the need for political unity in the face of those who seek to divide us and drag us back.

"I will continue to liaise with the PSNI in an effort to restore normality here as soon as possible. I would urge people to continue to exercise vigilance."
