Residents Win Permission To Challenge £55m Office Development

Residents have won legal permission to challenge the building of a £55million office building to be developed next to homes in the Markets area of Belfast.

The High court ruled for a full court hearing following concerns over the proposed development.

Sinn Fein Councillor Deirdre Hargey said it is "not appropriate" to build tower blocks overlooking two-storey homes.

She said: "The community are not opposed to development of the site but are concerned about the scale of the tower blocks and the fact that it will completely cut the community off and impact on quality of life.

"There should be balance, development should respect communities in the same way communities are asked to respect development.

"It has been Sinn Féin's view that the views of the local community in opposing this project are taken into account and listened to and this decision will enable them to have their voices heard."

Green Party MLA Clare Bailey said: "This is what grass roots community action looks like. The Market area needs more homes and not office buildings and I wish them every success with their legal proceedings.

"It is unfortunate that they have had to take this action, and I am happy to provide any support I can."
