NI public urged to sign up to Holocaust principles

Members of the public are being urged to affirm their support for the principles of Holocaust Memorial Day by signing public Books of Commitment.

With Northern Ireland hosting the 2004 UK Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January, people are being asked to sign each book which contain the seven Statements of Commitment, underpinning the objectives of the Day.

In recognition that 2004 will mark the 10th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda which resulted in the deaths of up to a million people in a little over 100 days, the theme for the 2004 national commemoration will be 'From the Holocaust to Rwanda: lessons learned, lessons still to learn'.

The main commemoration on 27 January will be at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast with events including;
  • Nazi Germany – A Race War, Nobody Excluded But Only Some Can Be Included

    Thursday 15 January, 1.10 pm, Linen Hall Library, Belfast
  • From The Holocaust To Rwanda

    Saturday 17 January, 2.30 pm and 8.30 pm Lyric Theatre, Belfast
  • Quilted – An Experiential Piece Created For Holocaust Memorial Day 2004

    Saturday 17 - Tuesday 27 January, Lagan Lookout Centre, Belfast
  • Eternal Memory – A commemoration by the Ulster Orchestra

    Tuesday 20 January, 7.45 pm, Ulster Hall, Belfast
  • Remember Rwanda, 10 Years On – Talk by survivors of the genocide

    Tuesday 20 January, 8.00 pm Verbal Arts Centre, Londonderry

    Wednesday 21 January, 1.10 pm, Linen Hall Library, Belfast

Holocaust Memorial Day was agreed on 27 January 2000, between 44 governments, including the UK, who attended the Stockholm Forum on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research.

The Forum set out to give support, education and research and to better equip governments to combat racism, anti-Semitism and intolerance as they manifest themselves in contemporary society.
