Anti-Islam Leaflet To Be Investigated

An investigation has been launched into the distribution of anti-Islam leaflets in the Ravenhill Road area of Belfast.

The leaflets, distributed by a group called Generation Sparta, contain warnings about what they claim is the "Islamification" of the Northern Ireland.

The PSNI have confirmed that they are treating the distribution of the leaflets as a hate crime.

Posting to Twitter, DUP MLA Christopher Stalford, who was brought up on Carrington Street in the area, said that the group behind the leaflet "do not speak for the people who live there", adding that he "condemns this utterly".

Sinn Féin’s Mairtín Ó Muilleoir said: "Those racist elements behind this anti-Muslim and fascist propaganda intend only to stoke fear, hatred and division amongst the people of our shared city.

"Sinn Féin unequivocally condemns hatred of this kind.

"I have reached out to Muslim community leaders in South Belfast in an attempt to allay any concerns raised by this incident.

"I am calling on all communities, and all political leaders in the targeted areas, to publicly condemn this hatred.

"We all have a responsibility to show solidarity and compassion with our Muslim brothers and sisters in the face of this callous bigotry."
