Man Dies In Maghaberry Prison

A 22-year-old man has died while in custody at Maghaberry Prison, the Northern Ireland Prison Service has reported.

The Department of Justice has confirmed that the man died in custody on the morning of Thursday, 30 August. The man's next of kin have been informed.

The PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have been informed about the death.

Director General of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, Ronnie Armour, said: "On behalf of the Northern Ireland Prison Service, I would like to extend my sympathy to the family of the prisoner. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time."

Prison Arts Celebrated
Northern Ireland prisoners have won two first prizes and landed more than 29 awards in a prestigious UK-wide competition for prison arts. Artwork from Maghaberry and Hydebank Wood was among 150 original visual pieces on display at the annual Koestler Awards Exhibition which previewed at the Royal Festival Hall in London today.

Prison Services Launch Recruitment Drive
The Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) has today launched a recruitment campaign for new Custody Officers. It expects to recruit up to 200 officers to this new grade within the Prison Service. NIPS Director General Colin McConnell has described the launching of the recruitment campaign as a key milestone in building a new Prison Service.

Prison Response To Collapsed Inmate 'Inadequate' - Ombudsman
The Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has described as "inadequate" the response by staff at Maghaberry Prison to a prisoner who collapsed in his cell and subsequently died. 46-year-old David Brown died from a brain haemorrhage at an outside hospital on 15 December 2012, while in the custody of Maghaberry Prison.

Lock-up Was Factor In Prisoner's Death
The practice of locking up prisoners for almost all of the day has been identified as a major factor in a recent spate of custody suicides. The issue has come to light after a teenage prisoner - who was locked in his cell for around 22 hours a day because of short-staffing - committed suicide.

Maghaberry Inmate Dies In Custody
A prisoner in Maghaberry has died in custody, the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS) has confirmed. The 28-year-old man died in hospital on Tuesday, 11 December. His next of kin have been informed. Investigations into the death have been launched by the PSNI, Coroner and the Prisoner Ombudsman.
