Belfast High Sheriff sworn in for 2004 term

Councillor Ruth Patterson has been sworn in as the new High Sheriff of Belfast for 2004 in a traditional ceremony in the City Hall.

Councillor Patterson, a member of the Ulster Democratic Unionist Party, has served the Balmoral Electoral Area since the last local government elections back in May 2001. She succeeds Councillor Margaret Clarke as High Sheriff of Belfast and is the eighth woman to hold the post.

Councillor Patterson serves on the Council’s Health and Environmental Services Committee and the Town Planning Committee, as well as the Personnel Sub-Committee, the Community and Leisure Services Sub-Committee and the Tourism and Development of Belfast Sub-Committee. She is also a member of the District Policing Partnership and the DPP’s South Belfast Sub-Group and also represents the Council on the Board of the Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau, the Lagan Valley Regional Park Advisory Committee, the Northern Local Government Association, the Belfast Road Safety Committee and the South Belfast Partnership Board, as well as the management committees of the Council’s community centres at Donegall Pass and Finaghy.

The Local Government (Ireland) Act of 1898 provided for the appointment of a Sheriff for the newly created County of the City of Belfast.

The first High Sheriff of Belfast, Sir James Henderson was appointed in January 1900. Unlike the Mayoral year, the post of High Sheriff begins in January and ends the following December.

Historically, the sheriff’s role has been that of the protector of the monarch’s interests, although the role today is now largely ceremonial.
