DUP Candidate Claims Victory In Carrick-Castle By-Election

DUP candidate Peter Johnston has taken a seat on Mid and East Antrim Borough Council after topping the poll in the Carrick-Castle by-election.

He fills a seat left vacant after the death of Independent unionist councillor Jim Brown, who passed away suddenly in August.

2,873 votes were cast in the election, with Peter Johnston taking a total of 1,106 first preference votes, ahead of Ulster Unionist candidate John McDermott with 668 votes, and Alliance Party candidate Lauren Gray with 556 votes.

Following the victory, Mr Johnston said he hopes to "repay the trust" of those who voted for him.

"I will stand up for the area, speak up for the area and seek to improve Carrickfergus for those who live and work in the town," he said.

On Friday, DUP leader Arlene Foster congratulated Mr Johnston on increasing the party's vote share in the area by 11%.

"This was Peter's first election but it was evident on the doorsteps that people warmed to his youth, vision and enthusiasm for the area," she said.

"To top the poll is a massive achievement and vote of confidence in Peter. I also thank the people of Carrickfergus who recognised that Peter had the best plan for their area and backed the DUP's track record of delivery in the Council."
