Man Killed In East Belfast House Blaze

A man in his 50's has died in a house fire in east Belfast, prompting police to urge people to check their smoke alarms.

Emergency crews were called to a terrace house in Kyle Street, Sydenham in the early hours of Sunday 11 November.

Firefighters entered the building and discovered a man in an upstairs "smoke-logged" bedroom, who was carried to the ground floor and given medical treatment but was confirmed dead at the scene.

Group Commander Graham Lowry said in a statement:"This fire, which was due to an electrical fault, was not huge.

"The gentleman was the sole occupant of the house, but his little dog, which was downstairs, was rescued and is fine.

"It is not easy to lose a loved one at any time of the year, but close to Christmas is particularly difficult.

"I, on behalf of the Fire Service, offer our condolences to the family of this man.

"I would like to appeal to people to make sure they have a working smoke alarm installed."
