SDLP: The Ballymurphy Inquest Must Produce Answers

An SDLP MLA has said that the relatives of those who were murdered at the "hand of the state" deserve answers, as the inquest into the Ballymurphy Massacre gets underway this week.

Approximately 10 people lost their life over three days in August 1971 during an army operation. The victims, nine men and one woman, have long been branded as IRA gunmen by the British army, or people caught in the crossfire between soldiers and paramilitaries.

The bereaved families, however, hope the inquest will change this record about the death of their loved ones, who they believe were innocent and targeted deliberately.

Dolores Kelly MLA, the SDLP's Policing and Justice Spokesperson said: "The Ballymurphy families have waited for far too long for their day in court.

"After decades of being thwarted by political, military and policing actors, they are long overdue the answers they deserve.

"The SDLP want to once again commend the integrity and perseverance of the families as they continue on the long road for truth and justice."
