DUP Abstain From Vote On Govt Finance Bill

The DUP has called into question its confidence and supply agreement with the Conservative party by abstaining from supporting the Government in a series of votes on a Finance Bill.

The relationship between the Democratic Unionists and Prime Minister Theresa May has been under increasing strain since she announced her draft Brexit withdrawal plan last week, and tensions have been further heightened by their move to abstain on Monday 19 November.

The Conservatives require the support of the DUP to push through key policies in the House of Commons.

Arlene Foster's party also voted in support of a Labour amendment to the Finance Bill, which is seen as a gesture rather than an attempt to influence policy.

European leaders are set to sign off the draft agreement and framework of future relations in Brussels later this month.

Mrs May's reshuffled cabinet will meet today, Tuesday 20, for the first time since a number of ministers resigned last week, after they said they could not support the deal.

Both the UK and the EU have hinted that the proposal, which includes the controversial backstop plan to avoid the return of customs posts on the Irish border in the event no trade deal is reached, is unlikely to be changed.
