Holyland students offered chance to join training programme
University of Ulster students in the Holyland area of Belfast are being urged to sign up for a community development training programme offered by Extern, the social inclusion charity.
Up to 15 free places are available on the Introduction to Community Development Programme which offers an opportunity for career enhancement as well as the possibility of receiving a recognised qualification in community work if the course is completed.
Anne Monaghan, the University’s Community Relations Manager, said: “It’s important for students to recognise that they are part of the community, and this training will provide not only new skills, but also offers an opportunity for career enhancement, as everyone who completes the course will receive a recognised qualification in community work.
“We’ve very optimistic that our students will sign up for this course - and also join the new Belfast Holyland Regeneration Group, recently set up to tackle long-standing social issues in the area.”
Students will join existing long-term Holyland residents on the programme, which is to be delivered at the City Church, University Avenue, by experts from the Ulster Peoples’ College.
Sara Vaughan, Overall President of the University of Ulster, Students' Union supporting the initiative, added: "The University of Ulster Students' Union welcomes the opportunity being given to students not only to expand their knowledge of local and community issues and ways to address these issues, but to become a part of their community and work alongside residents.
“The Students Union would urge students to get involved in this training programme and help promote social inclusion and development in the Holyland area."
Students interested in being part of this innovative community relations project should contact Anne Monaghan on 028 9036 8367 or 028 9026 7241.
