Delay In Universal Credit Nothing To Be Celebrated- SDLP

The SDLP has said the Department for Communities' decision not to roll out Universal Credit until 2020 will only cause further adverse effects for low income and working families.

North Belfast MLA Nichola Mallon said the news may appear positive at first glance, but is not something to be celebrated.

"This announced delay in moving people over onto Universal Credit is an admission by the Tory Government that this system is flawed and is causing hurt and hardship, but it does not protect low income and working people. In effect it means more people are likely to lose out and be worse off as they are left to move on to Universal Credit prematurely or as a result of a change in their circumstances and in doing so will not receive the protections available under managed migration. I cannot stress enough how important it is that people seek independent advice before they make any move in respect of Universal Credit.

"This delay is nothing to be celebrated. What is needed is an immediate halt to the roll out of Universal Credit until there is urgent and radical reform of this cruel and deeply flawed system."
