National award for Lagan Valley arts complex
Lagan Valley Island Civic and Arts Centre in Lisburn has been recognised with a Royal Town Planning Institute Planning Award.
The Lagan Valley complex was one of the 17 winning finalists from over 100 entries across the UK and Ireland for the 2003 awards which were presented recently in London.
David Ferguson, Chief Executive of the Planning Service, said the award recognised the vision, determination and imagination of local planners.
"We have worked very closely with Lisburn Borough Council and Consarc, Architectural Consultants for the development, to create a public building and site which is undoubtedly a striking addition to the city of Lisburn," he said.
"This building shows what can be achieved through partnership and a positive approach to problem solving. The success of the complex clearly shows that Northern Ireland has the benefit of planners with vision and immense pride in what they are achieving – in partnership with other agencies, professions and local communities."
The basis for assessment by the three members of the judging panel, was that entries had to demonstrate a significant environmental improvement of lasting community benefit or an outstanding achievement, judged to have advanced significantly, the art of town planning for the benefit of the public.
