Police Seize Suspected Firearm In L'Derry Search

Police investigating a bomb attack in L'Derry on Saturday 19 have seized a suspected firearm during a follow up search in the city.

It was discovered on Wednesday evening in the Brandywell area.

A spokesperson said: "The recovery of this item will require a public safety operation but we will seek to keep this to a minimum to avoid disruption."

Following the conclusion of the operation, police released another statement saying the firearm will "need to be examined before we can confirm its capabilities".

It comes after a meeting of the city's stakeholders in an attempt to reinstate services in the community after days of unrest.

Three separate security alerts on Monday 21 prompted evacuations and traffic chaos across L'Derry.

Housing Executive contractors and some transport services were suspended in some areas as a result of the incidents which were all later declared as hoaxes.

Royal Mail also confirmed on Tuesday that its workers would not be attending certain areas, following advice from the PSNI.

Foyle MP Elisha McCallion announced that all services had been reinstated just hours before the suspected firearm was found.
